The Ultimate Sham: Why The Ultimate Warrior Does Not Belong in the Hall of Fame
The Ultimate Shame
Its been one week since I’ve sat in front of my television and watched WWE’s Monday Night Raw. One week since I watched the New Age Outlaws turn their back on CM Punk. One week since Daniel Bryan turned on The Wyatt Family. And one week since the WWE turned off any presence of common sense and announced that The Ultimate Warrior will be inductee into the 2014 WWE Hall of Fame.
The Ultimate Warrior conjures up images of neon green and hot pink arm bands and face paint. With his high energy entrance and power moveset, he was destined to succeed The Immortal Hulk Hogan. The 90’s was to belong to The Ultimate Warrior, but contract disputes due to ego prevented any of that from happening.
In the ring The Ultimate Warrior was basic, performing running splashes, gorilla press drops, etc. You don’t have to be a graduate of Stu’s dungeon to get into the hall of fame, but at least be entertaining. His most memorable match is Wrestlemania VI, and as a child I marked out, but as an adult that match is carried by nostalgia and a double clothesline. Now granted wrestling against Hogan (who himself has a pretty mundane moveset as well) did not help The Ultimate Warrior.
During his nine year tenure with WWE (back then the WWF) The Ultimate Warrior is known for beating Hogan clean, and being a Intercontinental and World Champion at the same time. Feuds with Rick Rude, Macho Man Randy Savage, and Papa Shango all take a back seat. His run in WCW is even worse.
"'How must I prepare?' You must ask yourself! 'Should I jump off the tallest building in the world? Should I lay on the lawn and let 'em run over me with lawnmowers? Should I go to Africa and let 'em trample me with raging elephants?'"
The Ultimate Warrior possessed no mic skills to speak of. Often rambling incoherently, about anything and everything, it was a surprise that a manager was never thrown upon him. In WCW they would take commercial breaks during his promo only to come back from said commercial break to have The Warrior, his name in WCW, still talking and the crowd as dead as door knob.
The Ultimate Warrior had a two to three year run where he was at the top on the wrestling industry. After that his career is filled with “no sells,” boring matches, horrible promos, and an ego that would make Kanye West jealous. So why on Earth would the WWE after putting out an unfavorbale DVD The Self Destruction of The Ultimate Warrior induct this man into the WWE Hall of Fame?
